Eel skins are individually small, but can easily be stitched together to fill larger panels. The demand for seamless access to data has led to an increase in handheld devices. In a bid to get the best viewing experience, buyers are treating themselves to luxury electronics devices such as Kindles and iPads. These devices are sleek, eye-catching and an absolute breeze to handle. To complement these delicate luxury electronics, many users are demanding equally luxurious electronics cases. Eel skin is a material that may just fit the bill for making water-resistant electronics cases that are both luxurious and functional.

Eel Skin in Fashion Accessories

Eel skin often goes unmentioned in exotic leather discussions. However, it has the potential to be an exquisite leather for electronics accessories. This unique skin, unlike other exotic skins, has a ‘plain’ appearance. Yet, what it lacks in visual impact, eel skin makes up for in flexibility, stretchiness, and ease of use. The skin is a win-win for both the producer and the end-user.

Eel leather usage, although uncommon in large-scale projects, has gained prominence in accessories. From jackets and pants to handbags and phone cases, eel skin lends simple sophistication to any accessory.

Qualities of Eel Skin

Ease of use

When dealing with skin, the ease of use is often overlooked by the end user. However, much of the final product’s appearance is determined by how easily it can be worked. Due to an environmental adaptation, eels are extremely agile. Eel skin is incredibly flexible. For the craftsman, this means that he will have to skive less to achieve the desired skin. For you, it means a fine cut and clean finish combining to make you a prize-worthy electronics case.

Stretchiness

Mobile devices require close attention to detail. Sleek edges and smooth curves are just some of the main selling points of larger devices. With that in mind, what makes eel skin the best fit for these devices? You need a case that does not change these key dynamics. Eel skin, in all its stretchy glory, hardly distorts the shape of any electronics. Eel leather provides that extra bit of stretchiness to snugly fit around all the edges of tablets, phones, and other devices.

Water Resistance

Soft and durable may not be a common combination, but for eel leather, this is one of its strong points. While it’s flexible, it is also water-resistant, making it perfect for outdoor, all-weather use.

Some Concerns About Eel Leather

While eel leather may have these stand-out qualities, there are a few factors that may positively or negatively skew the customer or manufacturer preference.

  1. Softness. Eel leather, while highly valued, may be too thin for some users. If you would like a tougher, purer skin, you’d be more comfortable with lizard or ostrich leg skin. To solve this little issue, craftsmen use a layer of cowhide or bonded leather that only reinforces the eel skin, making sure it does not compromise the quality of the final product.
  2. Size. Individually, eel skins are very small in size. However, eel skin is typically sold in panels comprised of dozens of skins joined together. These panels are typically stocked in 2 feet wide x 5 feet long, which should be large enough for anything you need to cover.

How Do You Care for Eel Skin?

Eel leather is as delicate as it is beautiful. However, keeping it elegant may be harder than some other skins. Water spills shouldn’t be a big worry, as they tend to dry off rather quickly, leaving its original color intact. However, stains such as fizzy drinks, ink, and lotion require quick attention. The faster you act on eel skin stains, the less cleaning you will need to eradicate the mess.

  1. Oils and Lotions. Oils and lotions are some of the hardest stains to get rid of, yet you may have a few spills on your devices. Apply a dollop of rubber cement, let it dry and gently peel the cement off. Depending on the size and intensity of the stain, you might have to repeat this simple process a few times.
  2. Fizzy Drinks. Around the house, you may be handling your devices while enjoying a refreshment of your choice. If you are unfortunate enough to spill juice or a fizzy drink on the water-resistant case, soak up some of it with a dry cloth and then leave it out to dry.
  3. Ink Stains. Depending on where you store your pens, you might get an ink spill on your electronics. On the upside, a gentle finger or eraser should work. However, ink stains on eel leather sometimes may never come off.
